National flags in chinese with names

The Chinese translations of various country and territory names possess intriguing connotations. For instance, the Chinese term for the United States, 美国 (Měiguó), literally signifies “beautiful country.” However, it is plausible that 美国 (Měiguó) was chosen for the United States due to the approximate phonetic resemblance of “Měi” to “America.”

Similarly, other country names such as 肯尼亚 (kěn ní yà, denoting Kenya) and 爱尔兰 (ài ěr lán, representing Ireland) are transliterations based on their English pronunciations.

In contrast, the name for Japan, 日本 (Rìběn), directly translates to “sun root,” presumably because Japan is located to the east of China, where the sun appears to rise every morning.
